28/09/2002 | SAM RAINSY PARTY ASKS THE CAMBODIAN GOVERNMENT TO FULLY ABIDE BY THE UN REFUGEE CONVENTION

NATIONAL ASSEMBLY OF THE KINGDOM OF CAMBODIA

Phnom Penh, September 27, 2002

CAMBODIA MUST PROTECT REFUGEES FROM VIETNAM

Over the last few days the Sam Rainsy Party has received alarming information according to which there has been a new influx in the Cambodian provinces of Ratanakkiri and Mondolkiri of Montagnards (hill tribe people) fleeing political and religious persecutions in Vietnam and the Cambodian authorities are cooperating with the Vietnamese authorities in order to arrest those asylum seekers and forcibly send them back to Vietnam where they will be likely, according to past experience, subject to severe retribution.

The Sam Rainsy Party asks the Cambodian government to fully abide by the UN refugee convention to which Cambodia is a signatory. This entails granting authorization and giving access and facilities to UNHCR officials to investigate on the spot and take adequate measures to protect would-be refugees, and ensuring that no person seeking asylum in Cambodia is arrested, ill-treated and forcibly sent back to his/her country.

Today, Members of Parliament Sam Rainsy, Son Chhay and Cheam Channy wrote to Prime Minister Hun Sen to ask him to elaborate on the government policy regarding asylum seekers who have crossed the border from Vietnam and are now in hiding in Cambodia in most unclear conditions.
