Press-Release
For four days next week, Washingtonians will have an opportunity to see horrific scenes of the war in Chechnya, in a documentary film festival organized by human rights groups. Setting the stage for President Putin's visit to Camp David later this month, the films provide striking evidence of the most massive atrocities committed in Europe since WWII.

The festival will open on September 15, at the US Holocaust Memorial Museum with PBS’ “Greetings from Grozny” containing dramatic footage of a “mopping-up” operation by Russian special forces in a Chechen village.

A panel discussion will follow, featuring Director Paul Mitchell, Rep. Chris Smith (R-N.J.), Lord Judd of the Council of Europe and Patrice Page of Medecins sans Frontieres. The festival will continue at the Visions Cinema at 1927 Florida Ave.

In addition to reports from Chechnya, the six film program includes a British account of the last year siege of a Moscow theater ending in the death of 139 hostages caused by controversial Russian use a nerve gas, and a French investigation into the theory that the Russian secret service was behing the 1999 apartment block bombings in Moscow that triggered the invasion of Chechnya and propelled Vladimir Putin to power.

Organized by Amnesty International, the International Helsinki Federation for Human Rights, the Foundation for Civil Liberties, and the Moscow-based Sakharov Center and Memorial, the festival is part of the ongoing campaign synchronized to political developments such as the recent state visit of President Putin to U.K.
Copies of the films will be send by the organizers to every US congressman and senator.

After Washington, the festival will move to New York to coincide with Mr. Putin's address to the UN, and then to Moscow where it will be shown during the Kremlin-sponsored elections in Chechnya in early October.
