07/12/2006 | Statement on the conditions of Dr. Chee Soon Juan Secretary-General of the Singapore Democratic Party and member of the NGOs Steering Committee of the Community of Democracies, currently detained in Singapore

Brussels, December 7, 2006

We participants to the conference “Democracy Promotion: the European way” held in Brussels on December 7, organized by the Alliance of Liberal and Democrats of Europe Group at the European Parliament, strongly condemns the jail sentence to five months passed on Dr. Chee Soon Juan last November 23 for the “crime” of speaking in public without a valid permit.

Such decision represents another step in the judicial persecution against Dr. Chee Soon Juan and of the Members of the Singapore Democratic Party. Dr. Chee has already been bankrupted and deprived of his civil rights, including the right to travel, as a result of a libel suit by Singapore's authoritarian ruler Goh Chok Tong.

Today we are also very worried by the deterioration of Dr. Chee Soon Juan’s health during his detention. On December 3, he has been admitted to the hospital after that blood has been found in his urine and he is suffering abdominal pains without having received yet adequate medical attention.

We call on the Singapore Government to immediately provide medical care to Dr. Chee Soon Juan by professional and independent medical authorities. We also call on the European Parliament and the European Union to immediately pressure the Singapore Government to act in order to safeguard Dr. Chee health and make sure that he is granted the respect of his basic rights, including freedom of speech and the right to participate in the political life of Singapore.
